Top 10 Landmarks in the UK

Every year, thousands of people visit the British Isles with the intention of travelling through the UK and seeing some of its top landmarks. However, once you've bought some single trip travel insurance, packed your bags and dusted off your umbrella, where are the best places to go?

Travelling through England isn't just a physical journey, it feels like a journey through time. From Peterborough Cathedral which was erected in 1118, right through to Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth which was completed in 2005, there are some stunning landmarks throughout the British Isles, spanning the centuries.

Peterborough Cathedral (c.1118)

Peterborough Cathedral is an incredible place to visit for architecture buffs. Cathedral tours run throughout the year and visitors can see Katharine of Aragon's grave, take photographs of the external gothic architecture, or enjoy the music events which are regularly held here.

York Minster (1408)

Built in 1408, York Minster is also visually arresting. The church is famous for its Bedem Glazier's studio in which the colourful medieval glass windows are renovated and restored. Tours of the stained glass workshop run several times a week for visitors and there is also a gift shop and tea rooms.

Edinburgh Castle (1574)

Costumed performers act in events entertaining and historically educating visitors, the great hall houses an outstanding weaponry display, delicious food is served in the Queen Anne Café and musical concerts are hosted at Edinburgh Castle throughout the year. Big Ben (1858)

Big Ben (The Great Bell) is one of the UK's most prominent and best known landmarks. Tower Bridge, London (1893)

The main entrance is the North West Tower and the Victorian Engine Rooms are located at the Tower on the South side.

Royal Liver Building, Liverpool (1911)

The Royal Liver Building is situated on one of the world's best known riverfronts. It's the main attraction at the Pier Head and is famous for the Liver Birds which sit at the crown of the building. Ferries which famously "cross the Mersey" provide an incredible view of the Royal Liver Building.

The London Eye (1999)

The London Eye has inspired many similar structures throughout Europe and the Americas. Trips in the Eye can be purchased from the ticket booths adjacent to the structure but you can also get a discount if you book in advance. The views it offers over the London skyline are unparalleled. The Eye has also proved to be something of a focal point for London's New Year celebrations when it forms the centrepiece of dramatic firework displays.

Bullring, Birmingham (2003)

Birmingham's Bullring was completed in 2003 and has since delighted shoppers with a wide range of high street brands. With over 160 outlets and more than 25 restaurants from which to choose, the Bullring is nothing short of a shopping extravaganza!

30, St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), London (2004)

30 St Mary's Axe has been nicknamed "the Gherkin", reflecting the shape of the structure. It has become one of the best known features of the London skyline since its construction. Its innovative architecture has made this landmark well worth visiting. It is also the sixth tallest building in the whole of London. Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth (2005)
