Sailing the Croatia Coast

The popularity of this perfectly situated collection of islands is understandable. They offer an idyllic location, wonderful weather and sailing conditions and a whole array of historical delights to explore. Their positioning in the Adriatic Sea means that they have the benefit of minimal winds and a warm sun. With over a thousand islands full of mystery and only a small percentage of these being inhabited, there is more than enough to keep the avid adventurer entertained and mesmerised.

There are a few technicalities and requirements to remember before setting out on your course. You will need to ensure that you have a valid boat license and once you reach Croatia you will also need to obtain a cruising permit, as the local regulations are relatively strict in this regard. It is also advisable to have single trip travel insurance before you embark on such a journey and to ensure that it will cover your planned maritime activities. Whilst the currents are weak in most places, there are some areas that are more challenging and it is advisable that only the most experienced take these routes.

The currency in Croatia is the Kuna, but the Euro is widely accepted. The time is GMT+1 and GMT+2 in the summer. The drinking water on the majority of the islands is perfectly safe to drink, although in extreme temperatures it may be in short supply.

There are so many islands along the coast of Croatia that an individual traveller can find a route that is ideal for them. However, there are several that are preferred destination stop-off points and show fascinating aspects of Croatian architecture and cultural history. These include the Croatian Primorje, the Kornati islands and Dalmatia. However, the other areas of South and Central Dalmatia, Kvarner and Istria are also fascinating areas to visit.

The main marina of the Kornati islands is Piskera. With 120 berths and an open season between April and October, this area is very popular amongst tourists. Here there are 147 uninhabited islands that are entirely unspoiled and offer stunning scenery, without the taint of many modern tourist attractions. The island of Rasip, in particular, is especially good for its diving opportunities and, in fact, many of the areas along the Croatian coast are ideal diving spots and offer some fascinating underwater experiences. For the inexperienced diver there are several schools offering comprehensive training to allow you to fully appreciate these opportunities, but it is advised that you first obtain single trip travel insurance with appropriate diving cover.

In Southern Dalmatia the weather is very sunny and a little warmer than the Kornati islands and is also very stable, which is ideal for sailing conditions. The popular resort and Old Town of Dubrovnik is a must-see and offers fascinating architectural heritage. This is a popular place, visited by many cruise ships so it is suggested to either arrive early in the morning or late afternoon. Hvar is also a very popular area, offering beautiful Venetian architecture, contrasted with a very lively nightlife. Star Grad dates back to 385BC and because of the rich historical and architectural sites it offers, it is a must see on your exploration of the Croatian coast.

For a quieter escape, the mysterious island Sucuraj is an ideal stopping point. It is very peaceful and has a much smaller population than other areas, such as Hvar. Whilst there is less to see here in terms of architectural sites, the scenery never fails to deliver. Finally, for the more experienced and daring individual Palagruza is an ideal island to visit. Due to the currents and unstable weather it is a more challenging area to sail, but once there it offers beautiful scenery and some of the best scuba diving of all the islands. If visiting any of these more challenging areas or engaging in water sports, having single trip travel insurance is important in ensuring peace of mind.

Due to the mountainous topography of this area it is important to allow for the possible challenges the weather may throw at you. Three of the more prominent local winds are the bora, sirocco and maestral. It is vital that you check the possibility of running into these winds during your visit and make allowances for them. In preparing for your trip, in addition to organising suitable single trip travel insurance, do research the patterns and timings of these winds when planning your route.

Before leaving you should of course make sure that your passports are fully valid; that you know your desired route and are fully prepared for any eventualities. This area of Europe is an ideal location for a sailing trip, offering fascinating historical sites, beautiful scenery and largely ideal weather conditions.
